Deck of Scarlet – new makeup subscription is a bi-monthly makeup subscription for $29.95. It was started by the same people bring us Scentbird. Every other month you get a palette with three eye shadows, two lip colors, two face colors, and one or two add ons. It allows you to create a multitude of looks with one easy to store palette. I’ve been subscribed to Scentbird since early last year so signing up for Deck of Scarlet was a no brainer.

Even though this palette is numbered as 01, it is actually the third palette from Deck of Scarlet. On their website it’s listed as a spring palette. When they first released the images for this one I was immediately drawn to the orange eyeshadow. I’ve never actually purchased any eye products that even come close to this shade so I was super excited to get my hands on it. I was a little perplexed by the green shade as I wasn’t sure how it would fit with the rest of the palette but I’m always up for a challenge.
Once I finally got my hands on the palette and started playing around with the colors I realized that it’s a great spring palette for darker skin tones (although I can come up with some great looks for my fair skin as well). For me personally though I think this is going to be fun to play with in the fall.
The artist in chief for this palette is Evon Wahab from YouTube and Instagram. Out of all the different companies that are doing makeup collabs with beauty influencers, I believe Deck of Scarlet is really getting it right. They’re keeping things simple with having a standard set amount of product for each release and most important of all is the diversity of the people they have worked with. What you end up with are makeup collections that truly work for a variety of skin tones and are diverse.
My only issue so far with the company has been the shipping. Two of the palettes shipped super late for me but customer service was awesome at responding and helping me out with one of them. The other was delayed for everyone but they kept us informed as to why there were delays. I do wish there was less of gap between the time influencers receive theirs and subscribers get them though. But there’s been nothing so far that has made me consider unsubscribing.
Another really cool thing about this company is the ability to buy stand alone palettes until they are out of stock (they are limited edition after all). This is great for newcomers that have missed the previous ones. There is a price difference versus how much you pay with a subscription. While the subscription only costs $29.95 per palette (with the ability to skip any you don’t want), a stand alone palette is $44.95. As the time of writing, this palette is still available for purchase.
The products are super pigmented, cruelty free, and made in the US!
The first shade in the trio is Fudge. It’s a nice warm chocolate color that applied lightly could be used as a good base. Or you can take it to the extreme for a bold night time look.
The second shade is Sunshine. Now according to the website, this is a face pigment so it can be used for more than just your eyes. Personally, this was the most challenging color in the set. It’s a bold and bright golden orange that can really stand on its own. I think a look combining it with the Halo highlighter would make for a perfect spring/summer beachy vibe.
The third shade is Mermaid. At first I thought this shade felt a little out of place with the rest of the colors in the palette. However after playing around with it I found that it’s perfect for a fun night time look. It’s a beautiful shimmery forest green that I really think helps make the overall palette even more versatile.
The two cream lipsticks in this palette perfectly compliment the rest of the products. When you first go to use their lip colors its best to remember that these are creamy products so be careful when grabbing them with your lip brush. They are easy to apply, comfortable to wear, and long lasting. Both can be topped with a clear or colored gloss to transition them to work for many different looks.
The first color is Coral Kisses. As you can probably guess its a bright coral color perfect for a day time look. If it’s too bright for you, the other shade can be added to help tone it down.
The second lip color is Almond. Again the name really is perfect for this color. It’s a warm light brown color that can be worn day or night.
Don’t be alarmed by the next sentence. I’m not big on contouring and very rarely do it. I know, it’s almost a makeup sin at this point not to contour but I’m not a morning person and I’m usually rushing to do my makeup before work. When I saw a highlighter and a bronzer as the two face products I was a little bummed but I can make them work. This is also where Sunshine can come back in to use a a blush.
The highlighter Halo is a sheer and subtle highlighter. It’s more on the neutral end and I’m personally going to get the most use out of is on my brow bone. As I mentioned earlier, I think pairing it with the eyeshadows is also fun.
The bronzer Sandstorm is also on the lighter, more neutral end compared to others I’ve seen. This makes it easy to use for a simple sun kissed look without the need of a whole lot of blending.
Like the two palettes before, this one comes with an eye liner and a lip pencil as additional products. However until the previous ones this did not have a space in the palette for one of them which made the size a little smaller. I actually prefer it this way, I just wish the other two palettes were the same size.
The lip liner, Cake Pop, is a light brown that works well with both of the cream lip colors. I haven’t tried it yet but I plan on testing it out as a full lip base with a gloss on top.
The eye liner is called Chameleon. This is a perfect name for it as it’s not really green, not really brown but a little bit of both. It’s a great versatile liner that’s going to work with all the colors in the palette.
Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of a look with this palette yet! I also won’t have any for my next couple of review posts but that’s because I have something super exciting planned. I’m going to be teaming up with a local makeup artist to do some looks! Check out her Instagram at graphikcosmetics and give her a follow!
