Tarot For The Modern Witch

With the rise of the modern witch, it was only a matter of time until someone combined old with new. The Golden Thread Tarot does just that with it’s gorgeous cards and companion smart phone app!

I have to be honest, I discovered this tarot deck on Pinterest while researching for the blog last summer. I’ve been intrigued by tarot for years and got my first deck back in high school. Unfortunately between college and working it took a major back seat. For the last year I had been wanting to reconnect with the more spiritual part of myself but that connection I used to feel with my old tarot deck just wasn’t there anymore and again I put the cards aside.

While sifting through everything Pinterest has to offer though I kept coming across pictures of this beautiful gold and black deck and I had to learn more about it. After a little digging I found the Etsy and was disappointed to find that they were sold out. So I did a little more digging and started following the creator on Instagram as I waited for updates. While I waited though, I discovered that she had also created a companion app for smartphones and I immediately downloaded it. While I waited I was able to get familiar with the deck and even do readings right on the app which has helped refresh me on the card meanings.

Finally the announcement that new cards were in and ready for orders in fall. I dropped what I was doing at work and headed over to the site to get a tarot deck and matching altar cloth. Then I had to wait for them to arrive, which actually didn’t take very long at all! As soon as I opened the box and got my hands on the cards I fell in love.

Using The Deck

Golden Thread Tarot makes it extremely easy to either learn how to use your deck for those just entering into the world of tarot. However, for someone like me that’s reacquainting myself after a decade, it’s also really helpful. The companion smart phone app streamlines the learning experience so that you can learn about your cards and the different positions they represent while doing a reading. Golden Tarot celtic cross spread on silk cloth

The spread picture was my first one after opening the cards. One by one I was able to see which position I needed to pull a card for. Then the app would tell me what that position and card represented. This allowed me to easily go through the process of the reading without having to shuffle through pages of a book. Even more exciting is that the app will then save the spread! It asks for your question and then lets you input your reaction. This will allow me to go back and dive deeper into it at a later time. I can also share the reading with a friend right from the app! Even if you don’t have a physical deck, you can still use the app to give yourself a reading!

Overall I’m really in love with this new deck as well as the techy side of it. Check out the Golden Thread Tarot website to purchase your own or get the app. If the deck isn’t exactly your style, there’s a brand new one available with it’s own app so make sure you check that one out too!

Between the artwork, the quality of the cards, and the companion phone app; I think this might be the best tarot deck around right now. I hate giving things a 10 but I haven't been able to find one issue with these cards.

About

What is Counter Culture? Well, Webster’s refers to it as: “a way of life and set of attitudes opposed to or at variance with the prevailing social norm.” They’re right of course, and over here at Not your Counter Culture, we want to elaborate on that variance. From food, music and lifestyle commentaries, to social issues and culture in every sense of the word. This blog is a collaborative collection of what’s new, what’s trending, and what truly makes folks like us a little more out of the ordinary.
