Across the country, folks of the LGBTQ+ persuasion celebrate Pride between the months of June and September. It’s a time to let loose and to stand up for your sexuality. A time to not be afraid, but instead to embrace who we are. This community is one of the strongest I’ve known. We’ve weathered and faced demons that still fight ruthlessly to destroy us, but one thing has always been certain. Love will always prevail.
This playlist was a bit of a difficult task for me. As someone who’s only been out for approximately five years, I had some time to consume LGBT culture, but not a ton. I’m not some wise lesbian that knows the meaning of life and how to pick up chicks. I still want to constantly watch read and grab anything that even remotely spells G-A-Y. I feel like I haven’t lived the lesbian life long enough to curate something of this caliber, but I’ve done it anyway because, it’s fucking Pride, which means it’s time to P-A-R-T-A-Y.
I did something a little different. Sure, there are anthems that have spanned generations. We wave them like proud flags and scream at the top of our lungs. But with more visibility, comes more talent. Artists like Troye Sivan have made gay music mainstream with songs like WILD and his latest, (BLANK). While others, such as, (BLANK and BLANK) prove that the idea equality and love have spread the world over. The artists on this playlist may be fairly new, but they represent a generation of the LGBT+ community that has flourished because of those who fought for our rights in the past.
For those finally able to speak our voice and scream our truths. Sure, there’s fear, but we’re fearless. We’ve been taught to stand up for ourselves and to never be ashamed. To meet violence with tolerance from those who came before us. To stay strong and fight for what we love. We’re human, we’re gay, and we’re proud.
