Feathers. Tufts of white and gray and brown and gold, scattered along the shrouded sharp rocks. Stirring only when the melodies begin to ebb just as the sea. These sounds are stunning and somber. Their hypnotizing harmonies only rivaled by the angels and the gods. These are not just women. Out here, just past Capri is the Island of Anthemoessa. It’s flowers bountiful, and it’s Sirens spellbinding. Take heed though sweet sailor, for these creatures feast on lustful eyes and ears; their talons willing to rip out the hearts of any man who comes too near.
Some say that Sirens came to be from Demeter’s curse after failing to keep Persephone from Hades. It is also said that Hera, queen of the gods, persuaded the Sirens to enter a singing contest with the Muses. The Muses won the competition; then plucked out all of the Sirens’ feathers and made crowns out of them. Out of anguish, these maidens turned white and lept from a cliff; forming the three islands. It is said that they will haunt them for all eternity. If you dare to listen, be sure to check out ‘You and Your Sister’ by The Mortal Coil as well as ‘Troubled Waters’ by Cat Power.
For the fallen angels who mourn for solace in their song, but instead find their curse a kind that murders men. Do they wish it to be so? We may never know, for fear that if we get too close and hear the sweet echoes of their songs from the bows of out ships; these angels will deal us a terrible fate. They entangle and entrap; ensnare and carnage ensues. Or have we been misguided? Are these sirens only want for company? Do we dare fulfill their requests?
