Charleston has long been rife with best of lists. From our own local competition every year to the top places to visit by tourist magazines, everyone thinks they know the best places to visit in town. What about all of those great local shops that never make the list? What about the places that don’t exude the pristine southern sensibility that so many people are looking for when they visit? We want to change all of that.
Charleston isn’t just the market downtown.
One of the things that gets the most attention when it comes to shopping in Charleston is the market downtown. While it does provide a wide variety of local vendors and your not so typical finds, it isn’t the end all. There are plenty of great places around town that offer a wide variety of products and services that you don’t necessarily think of when it comes to the historic town.
What about the restaurants? Over and over again I see the same places, tourist traps, listed as the best eats in Charleston. It’s almost become a joke at this point. The city is saturated with so many amazing places to grab a bite that you’ll never know about if you’re visiting and relying on a guide.
How we can change that.
One of the things that was suggested to me when brainstorming for this site was a guide to eclectic, weird, or off the wall places that most people haven’t heard of. Then I kicked myself for not thinking of it first. But that’s exactly what we’re going to start working on in a series called Off The Beaten Path.
We want to focus on local favorites that would never get the time of day from a travel magazine. Be on the lookout for spotlights on local places and a comprehensive guide. We would also love to hear your suggestions on places to feature. Feel free to leave a comment here, on Facebook, tweet at us, or send us an email!
